If exposed to the elements or constantly used, all metal and other surfaces wear after a while and require repair. Painting metal is not that different from painting other surfaces. No matter if it’s a staircase banister, bars, doors, or gate that you wish to repair, it’s crucial you prepare the surface. In this case, this means that you should apply heat to the surface, burn it, or grind it, to completely remove old coatings, rust, and dirt. The easiest way to do this is with a heat gun. A heat gun applies heat to the old layer until it comes off, and any residue is removed with a scraper. The next stage involves sanding or grinding, i.e. removing all remaining layers until clean metal is reached. Pay extra attention to the spots already covered by rust. Only then can you apply the first new layer, which is a primer or a protective anti-corrosion coating. If you need to apply several coatings, make sure the previous is completely dry until you apply a new one, or else blisters and cracks will appear. Once you’ve made sure everything is completely dry and clean, apply the paint finish. In industrial production, paint is applied as powder or by adding heat to ensure even application (polymerisation).
