Elevators - everything you need to know

    1. Lifts - what do you need to know?

Nowadays lifts are not only installed in commercial and high-rise buildings, but also in residential properties. They not only provide easier access for people with mobility problems, but also improve the comfort of life in general.

    Elevators
Lifts are a long-term investment as they should function for decades.

1.1. It increases the resale value of your home

Someday you might want to sell your home. The value of the property will certainly have changed depending on market conditions and inflation. However, if you gradually improve its appearance and functionality with wise investments and adaptations, you will make your property far more attractive to potential buyers over time and certainly increase its resale value. A lift definitely increases the value of any space. In addition, having a lift will widen the range of potential buyers since elderly people and those with mobility issues won’t be put off.

    1.2. It makes life easier

A lift makes it easier to get around a home, whether it’s people who need to move between floors or objects. The lift will have no problems moving heavy bags, pushchairs, storage boxes, equipment, or anything else, and you’ll be glad you won’t have to lug it up or downstairs yourself.

    1.3. It enhances safety

There are some people who have certain health problems which mean that stairs can pose a danger to them. Some have limited mobility, while others can’t get around at all. Installing a lift provides such people with a certain freedom and also a sense of security that they are not going to injure themselves. In addition, lifts are safe places because their doors are generally fire-resistant and they have an alternate power supply and the ability to call for help.

1.4. They are practical and space-saving

Lifts take up less space than stairs, which then leaves you with more space for something else. They can even be installed on the outside of the house, up against a wall, thus freeing up as much useful space inside as possible.

    1.5. Appearance and equipment

The appearance of any lift can easily be adapted to the style of your home. Choose a modern, stylish lift or a cosy, inviting one. You will also have at your disposal a myriad of wall, floor, and ceiling finishes (wood, stone, mirrors, glass, and the like), handrails, and other elements such as an intercom or alarm. A lift can thus become an aesthetic addition to the whole ambience of the room or it can hide behind a door that looks the same as every other door in the house.

1.6. Advantages for people who have mobility issues

By installing a lift in the house, you can allow a family member to move freely or stay in the house for as long as possible even as they grow old. Family homes are always like a scrapbook - full of memories. Therefore, it’s not surprising that there are people who are emotionally attached to their house and do not want to move away. Unfortunately, aging is a natural and unavoidable process, but, when combined with health problems, it can lead to restricted movement. Suddenly, even a staircase poses a major challenge. By installing some type of lift, you will allow this person to stay in the home they love for as long as possible.

    1.7. Varying prices

The price of a residential lift starts at around NGN12000000. It will be affected though by any construction work that needs doing prior to installation (lift shaft, frame, etc.), the size and load capacity of the cabin, installation of manual or automatic doors, communication devices, the number of floors, equipment, etc.

    2. Quotes for lift installation

Buying a lift is a long-term investment as it is expected to serve you for decades. Therefore, it’s a good idea to think carefully about what you want and what you need, to get various quotes from different suppliers, and to see what they offer before deciding on one. When doing your research and comparing quotes, pay special attention to whether the supplier offers a warranty, aftersales maintenance, and servicing, in addition to the lift itself and installation.

    3. Types of lifts

    3.1. Passenger lifts

These lifts are designed to carry people. They can be used in different kinds of buildings - residential, hospitals, business and commercial, prefab, and even in high-rise apartment blocks. They are economical, safe, and environmentally friendly. This group includes residential, fire-fighting, and disabled access lifts, as well as mobile platforms.

    3.2. Goods lifts

These lifts are primarily designed for the transport of goods. They are used in warehouses and industrial facilities which could not function without them. The shape of the cabin, speed, drive, and size are adapted to meet specific requirements. This group includes mobile platforms, lifts for smaller or larger loads, dumbwaiters, lifts for cars, and many other types.

    4. How do lifts work?

    4.1. Electric drive

Electric elevators need a counterweight to move. In fact, the counterweight weighs the same as the weight of the cabin and half its maximum load. Thus, the lift car is balanced by the counterweight and when the lift goes up, the counterweight goes down and vice-versa. An electric elevator must have a machine room which houses a motor with a reducer. The drive motor turns a sheave which moves steel cables that pull the cab up. The dimensions depend on the load capacity of the lift and the height it needs to reach. Modern-day lift motors are more stable so passengers have a more comfortable ride without any shuddering or sudden jolts.

State-of-the-art electronic and mechanical components provide safety features like a speed limiter and brakes that are activated if the cabin accelerates by more than 30%.

    4.2. Hydraulic drive

Above all, hydraulic lifts are more robust and designed for long-term and frequent use. They usually provide a comfortable ride and are very quiet. In terms of durability and power, they are among the best. The system operates by means of a hydraulic pump connected to a cylinder that raises and lowers the cabin. When the call button is pressed, the hydraulic system moves pressurized fluid into the cylinder, which moves a piston connected to the lift, causing it to ascend. When the cabin descends, the system slowly opens the pressure release valves, thereby moving the fluid back into its reservoir, allowing the cabin to move. In the event that there is a power cut during the ride, the safety system activates an auxiliary battery power supply, meaning the lift can finish its ascent or descent safely.

Hydraulic lifts can operate up to a height of six floors, but there are numerous variants when it comes to the cabin and the system configuration itself. However, hydraulic elevators are certainly not cheap; despite this, they provide good value for money due to their characteristics. The actual cost of a lift like this depends on several factors, including the number of floors and openings in the cabin, its appearance, optional additional features, and so on. Hydraulic lifts are certainly among the safest as they have several safety features. It is important to note that these lifts must have a machine room for the control system and equipment. This is usually on the lowest floor, right next to the lift shaft. The dimensions and specifications of these lifts vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

    4.3. Pneumatic drive

Pneumatic elevators are a more recent invention. They are powered by air pressure via two polycarbonate tubes. One of the advantages of this type of lift is that it does not require a machine room and is therefore an excellent choice for a building that has already been finished. The pump that drives the lift is only 30 cm high and its diameter is equal to the pipes. If you plan to install this type of lift in your house or apartment, you should bear in mind you will need an opening of almost a metre just to bring it inside. If that’s impossible or if the cabin will take up too much room inside, it’s relatively easy to install it outside and then open a door in the external wall. Pneumatic elevators do not harm the environment and can lift loads up to 15 m or the fifth floor. Installation is inexpensive and quick, taking only a few days.

    4.4. Different installation methods

Installation will depend on whether the lift requires a machine room. The lift shaft can be constructed from brickwork, blockwork, and the like, or it can be panoramic.

    5. Lift installation process

Before choosing a lift, it is important to find out something about the basic prerequisites for its installation. It can be installed in an existing building, but it is always better to plan for its installation before construction begins and include it in the design plans. However, in both cases, the following technical prerequisites must be met:

    •           there must be adequate space for the lift (the amount of space required depends on the size of the lift),
    •           there must be a safety pit about 1.5 m deep below the lift,
    •           there must be about 50 cm of space above the lift for the lift mechanism,
    •           the wall which the rails that the cabin moves on are attached to must have sufficient load-bearing capacity to withstand the weight of the moving lift,
    •           depending on the drive type, there may need to be space for a machine room.

On top of this, it would be good to consider the following points:

    •           What floor will the elevator go to? How many ‘stops’ will there be?
    •           Will the cabin have just one door for entry-exit or will another one be needed on the opposite side?

All the construction and other preparatory work that must be completed before the lift itself can be installed is mainly done by other contractors, so they will need to liaise with each other to make sure plans are followed precisely and each stage is finished on time.

Installing a lift can take several weeks. It all depends on the complexity of the device and the equipment, and the method of installation. The contractor who installs the lift should also take care of all the electrical installations. The lift must have a switch to disconnect the drive from the power so it does not move during servicing. There are other safety mechanisms, such as stopping the door from opening if the lift does not stop in the correct place. When installation is complete, the lift is given a test run and then you will receive all the operating guidelines and instructions to follow in the event of an emergency (for example, instructions on emergency manual lowering procedures, etc.).

    6. Lift maintenance

Regular servicing and maintenance, and above all proper use, will ensure the flawless operation of your lift for years to come. It will also guarantee safety and will certainly reduce the chances of problems occurring. A lift has a number of safety mechanisms and functions that must be checked regularly and, if necessary, repaired or replaced, so you can continue to use your lift safely.
