1. Various types of eaves
There are several types of eaves, or more precisely, several methods for constructing them. First of all, careful consideration needs to be given to the material – it needs to be waterproof and durable, but also sufficiently flexible. Its also important to make sure the eaves are watertight and thermal bridges are avoided. Traditional wooden eaves may be open or closed. A third type are boxed-in eaves.
1.1. Traditional open eaves
With open, or exposed eaves, the underside is open and the rafters are visible. Usually wooden planks are used to cover the visible parts between the rafters. This type of finish gives the building a more traditional look and helps it blend in better with the natural environment.
1.2. Closed eaves
Another way to finish the eaves is with a soffit, made of various materials, to close and finish the underside of the eaves, so they blend in with the finish of the house. This requires a substructure to be made, usually of aluminium or galvanised sheet metal. Then the frame is covered with one of a variety of materials. Previously, plasterboard was most often used, but it proved to be a poor choice because it retains moisture. As a good alternative, different types of thermal insulation is used, including expanded polystyrene and extruded polystyrene boards. These can even be covered with decorative plasterwork to give an accomplished and attractive finish. Generally speaking, it is important that the boards are waterproof, lightweight, load-bearing, and easy to work with.
2. Painting the eaves
The eaves need to be protected for their own longevity, as well as all that of the other external parts of the house. As soon as you notice that the eaves have changed colour or that the paint or varnish is peeling away, you need to act right away. Whether open or enclosed, the eaves need protecting, painting or varnishing to avoid the surface layer of wood or plasterboard being damaged over time. When treated regularly, one or two coats will be sufficient; if not, the job will require more effort, time and money. The worst case scenario is that the damaged wood will also have to be replaced.
This is why it is important you dont put off any work to repair the eaves - it will prevent greater damage being done and more money having to be spent. Youll find it most economical to apply a single coat every four to six years.
